Summer School 2007

summer school

Saturday 30th June and Sunday 1st July 2007

Savourna Stevenson is an internationally respected harpist and composer with a career spanning 3 decades of performing and recording with some of the finest artists in traditional, world music , classical and jazz, helping to give the Scottish harp a new voice within contemporary music. A master of the small harp, her innovative approach has been an inspiration for a whole new generation of players. A dedicated teacher, Savourna has much to share with her students, from advice on harp playing techniques to encouraging harpists with their own creative ideas. Savourna has nurtured many of today’s talented young players well into their professional careers and is well loved by all of her past students.
The Summer School 2007 offers students an intense and inspiring weekend of harp tuition. The morning warm-up sessions will give students the opportunity to improve their existing technique and to learn some new tricks. There will be some exciting new repertoire for harpists at all levels to learn during the weekend and to take away and enjoy later. The course will also include improvisation sessions and composition workshops in which students will be encouraged to create and develop their own musical ideas. Students will have the opportunity to contribute to the informal Saturday night ceilidh which will also include a short performance from Savourna and some energetic dancing for all.

Once again Jane Bentley our resident percussion tutor will bring her collection of drums and tuned percussion from around the world. Jane has great experience in leading creative music making workshops and her percussion collection will be available for use in creative group work. Jane will also take an after lunch drumming workshop to give students a break from all that harp playing.

The Summer School will start at 10am on Saturday 30th June and the course fee includes lunch and dinner on Saturday, bed & breakfast on Saturday night and Sunday lunch.

Wiston Lodge
Wiston Lodge is a 150 year old hunting lodge, set in 55 acres of beautiful parklands and native woodlands, nestling under the south face of Tinto Hill in the Upper Clyde Valley. Recently B-listed by Historic Scotland, the building has many original features including wood panelled halls, Victorian fireplaces and fine stained glass. There are four main public rooms as well as the Dining Room and Games Hall. The glorious open space and peace at Wiston make it an ideal place for a relaxed weekend.

The accommodation is simple and comfortable mostly in family rooms. We feel that our younger students would be happier all together in their own small dormitory. There are a few single or twin rooms but these are very limited in number, so please book as soon as possible to reserve one. Bedding is provided, but towels are not. Please bring a towel with you.

Full board is provided. Breakfast is cereal, toast and boiled eggs. Lunch will be home made soup and home baked bread. We will have home baking with afternoon tea, and a two course dinner in the evening.

The nearest International airports are Glasgow (42 miles) and Edinburgh (38 miles). There is an hourly rail service from Glasgow to Lanark (13 miles away) and a bus service from Edinburgh to Biggar (9 miles away). We can arrange to have you picked up from Lanark or Biggar. Wiston is easy to get to by car just 7 miles off the M74 Junction13.
